This morning, while practicing Tai-Ki by the lake while The Missus swam in it, I had some visitors:

Three cranes on the grass
A family of cranes, the two adults on the left and right, and the young’n here on the right. They walked back and forth carefully feeding, and they did get closer than this picture while I was practicing. A couple of times, something I did, or a noise or movement nearby, caused them to put up a cry: the male a loud single-beat cry, and the female joined in with a two-beat cry in a different tone. I had never heard that, nor seen them do this together.

It was a sunny, hot, lovely day here in south-east Michigan, and I got to practice in the open air it seems like the first time in a good long while!

Four of the Five Tuesdays in May, at usual class time, 6-7pm, I’m offering open house for Tai-Ki:
May 3rd, May 10th, May 24th, May 31st
This is a chance for one and all to drop in any of those nights to hear about Tai-Ki and try some of the basic movements!
The practice of Tai-Ki has done a great deal for me personally (I’ve written about this all here), I think it can do a great deal for you as well. The movements, exercises, and forms are suitable for folks of all ages.
Do come by to see and hear more in May!
(May 17th succumbed to day-job travel).

A friend forwards me a like to this posting:
The Music/Martial Arts Connection at Fretterverse.
I used to play classical piano for many years, and I do see similar challenges in both that practice, and in what I do in Tai-Ki and other arts now:
-
You’re alive while you’re playing music, and to stay alive you have to keep breathing. Wind instruments even more so, but even on the piano you can’t get through a whole concerto without breathing. Like martial arts or swimming or running, proper breath can help you stay relaxed while playing; without proper or enough breathing, you will tense up and even get winded.
- Even with one instrument, whatever it is, there are so many shades and details, nuances and effects you can create. But you have to create something specific every time you play: whatever you create, it is best that you intend it specifically, that you are striving to make something particular. Otherwise you’re making random music without a focus. This need to intend to do something specific is very much present in martial arts as well: you can’t just sort of do a technique and expect success.
- Practice makes better, more practice makes more better!
